[read update below] This is a bad day for Topify. We have just been notified that our service is being sued for copyright infringement by a major company. I am not sure we are allowed to mention it but i’ll take the chances.

Fedex claims they have a registered patent for delivering faster and better email notifications and they claim we have infringed it.

Now this is ridiculous. Fedex should be concerned about delivering mail but this is not really their business.

Our lawyer tells us that the take down notice has been issued by someone by the name of Williams at Fedex. We don’t have more details but that could have a relation to Twitter too. For now this does not matter

We decided to fight it. This is going to be costly but we love Topify and won’t let Fedex ruin our efforts. If necessary we ll go to UPS and ask them for support. Our lawyer says we have great chances to Win.

[important update]: ok, given the proportion it is taking we prefer to tell you that this whole case was obviously a pre-april 1st fake as some readers already guessed. Read carefully the post and you’ll find instant hints towards a confirmation (starting by the tone, a reference to mr Williams/Twitter, UPS, this unlikely email patent, our Twit on the fake Fedex account…)

We are amazed by the reaction of the community and are positively surprised to see so much care for Topify. We have received a lawyer immediate help on this case. So short apologies for the fake scare and thanks for the support

The new topify is here. We have revamped our site. The first beta version was a quick and dirty one. We like a lot our new site and even though you don t need to come to it after registering. you can always come and tell us what you think

There is a long thread of thoughts and discussion about fake users and brands on Twitter. Hard to avoid with the popularity growing. There also many suggestions to spot those ghosts. Common sense and observation is a good start. But if you don’t have time and want to go threw the learning curve of spotting real users from fake users, try Topify.com (new site coming very very soon)

Topify replaces traditional email alert when you have a new follower and will bring you all the necessary information for you to judge who the user is. Most of our users in private beta are telling us that the first benefit is to spot spammers and fake users and avoid following them back.

I believe this is a good start to find out about a Ghost: say the way the bio or the last 5 twits are written or even better the ratio Following/Followers.

If you want to try it give a jump here (100 invitations). We have already a few thousands users in private beta and requests keep coming. The satisfaction rate is high (VERY high). That won’t be enough. Twitter will need to become or work with a full digital ID standard to stop that. Starting by checking email adresses (which they don t do for now).
